1: Radio.

  Radio seems much popular than I thought in China.  I can’t really remember when is the last time listen to radio.  Television accompanies with me since I have memory.  Perhaps because I lived in a small town, we walk to work and school.   There is not much time that we can use a radio.  I don’t know America radio is so prevalent. It seems because most of American drive to work, so the best thing to do is listen radio.   

2: Internet

China has banned a lot of sites.  Even though Chinese government denies that there is no Internet freedom in China, but as an international student I have to say that there is no Internet freedom in China.  Fortunately, Internet technology is a globe network.  Although China blocked bunches of sites, people can use software to browse outside.  We Chinese call this behavior wall climbing since there is a government-operated software called “the great fire wall”.  This software devotes in “protect” the “information accuracy” and “prevent the infecting from untruthful information”. Actually if I say these words in China, I can’t even say the words like government, communist party, Mao, Hu, etc.  There is no speech right too.  We all know these but there is no way to express unfair unless we want to be arrested. 

3:Public Relation.

  Public Relation history in America is longer than I thought.  I heard this word 4 years ago when I was in China.  I was watching a show that introduces a successful business experience.  And that was the first time I realizing that this is interesting career.  After finish this chapter, I feel there is much more things I need to study.  At first I was interested in a part of publish relation job, which is party organizer.  But public relation contains much more than I though.

Media Ethnic/Law

    Recently, Google is investigating by the Federal Communications Commission due to the violation of Street View project.  Google Street View is a project that uploads pictures and GPS address of the position through Wi-Fi collector and camera.  FCC suspects Google Street View project has violated privacy law because the Wi-Fi collector can collect the Wi-Fi data of residents.  Email content and password can be mistakenly collected since the network is unencrypted.  Google proclaims that they will delete the data as soon as possible and apology proudly.  I think FCC is doing right thing because for most of Wi-Fi users, we don’t have the skillful technique to operate the device.  We don’t even know we are stole if FCC didn’t shows up.  FCC is protecting our privacy and Google should show more response since it is the leader of network company.

Propaganda in Advertising/PR

This is a Gillete commercial that I have watched years ago, and it is impressive for me.  At that time, David Beckham was so popular that almost every woman in the world loves him.  Obviously, this commercial uses Beautiful People as a propaganda technique.  David Beckham shows the how easy to use this and even though he is shaving, he still looks cool.  Men are like to be like such a handsome guy.  On the other hand, this commercial uses another technique is Bandwagon.  The commercial shows that even Beckham is using Gillete and this makes him more handsome.  Also, the final slogan tells people that this is the best we can get, and the Gillete can give a great feeling.

Jay Chou is a Chinese popular singer who I like for years.  In this may, he releases his new album as a milestone for his 10^th year memorialize.  I have been followed him since I am in fifth grade.  He is the most successful R&B singer in China.  A song from his new album called superman cannot fly expresses that being a successful singer like him is hard.  He writes Chinese style songs making him popular and rich.  Every album of him has several Chinese style songs that will spread all over the nation and this also the reason why I like him so much.

My favorite oldie would be classic music, Canon.  Classic music is different from popular music.  Classic music will not make people tired.  Canon is one of them.  Canon has a great melody so it can be played on any classic instrument.  I like Canon because this song is the one that will not makes me tired when I start to listen to classic music.  At that period, every time when I feel fretful, I will put my earphones on and listen to Canon.  It makes me calm down and sleepy.  Anyway, it is a great song and worth to listen.

The concept for this magazine is to find the most interesting stuffs all over the world.  This magazine is different from other is we will focus our attention on stuffs that are advanced and sophisticated.  Luxury will be introduced in our magazine is not about expensive in price; it is major in stuff that have great taste.  

Readers :

The target audience for this magazine is whatever age or gender, but they might have the interested in wonderful stuff and the high salary to afford those great stuff.  If use number to describe, I would say year’s salary above 500 thousands dollar. 

Other magazines serving this demographic (your competition) :

I don’t know if there any magazines that focus on luxury in the U.S.  But our core concept is to enhance the taste of our audience instead of a public relation magazine for luxury manufacturer.  We don’t want our audience expert a luxury guide when reading.

Books

One of the most influential books for me is Harry Potter.  At the first time I read this series books was years ago but the story of it I can still remember.  J.K. Rolling builds a magical world in the book that makes everyone longing for.  This is my first Western scientific fiction.  This magic world makes me understand about how Western scientific fiction different from we. 

To Live is written by a Chinese author Yu Hua.  I read this book when I was in high school.  This book describes a person’s life during the past turbulent years.  I read this book after I study the history during that period because it is hard to understand the environment if you don’t know the background.  It makes me hating about politics and wars and also let me know that people have to fight for living.  Although the road in our life has numerous obstacles, we still need to conquer them. 

I-Ching is another book that has influencing on me.  I-Ching is an extremely esoteric book.  This book was written in 1000s years ago.  At that time, this book comes up with an idea that influences Chinese for thousand years.  It says human are have to obey nature and try to combine with nature.  It’s hard to describe in English.  If you know feng-shui or tai chi, I-Ching is they are original idea.

Week 2: Media Impact

    When I am reading magazine, I find that will magazine influence people can be a researching topic.  So my title of research would be weather reading magazines make people knowledgeable and more concern about the society.  I would like to use laboratory experiment to test and verify my idea.  First of all, this experiment will last half or one year to make the result reliable.  I will randomly choose 100 junior high school students and divide them into two groups.  First group will do as usually, go to school, do homework, play video games, and do excises.  Second 50 people will do a have a different schedule.  People in second group will asked to read magazines two hours everyday after study.  During this experiment period, second group people will receive different kind of magazines like fashion, news, science, nature and so on but first 50 persons will not.  At the end of the experiment period, I will gathering these two groups in a large room then give them an outer school knowledge test.  The test will content various of knowledge include in-class and out-class.  The result of this test would reflect what I want to research and I believe that reading magazines would make positive impact in peoples.
 

Media Autobiography

     For modern communication, there are eight types of mass media that would influence us every day.  They are Books, Newspapers, Magazines, Movies, Recordings, Radio, Television and the Internet. 

I would say that book is the most original media for peoples.  At least for me, I have learnt my first word on the textbook and studied lot knowledge on books.  However, to be honest, I don’t like some kinds of books like textbook and famous books because they are too heavy to read.  I do love fictions and scientific fiction. 

I like newspapers.  Newspaper is the most fast media decades ago but not now anymore.  I like Newspapers because they are fast, content a lot, and cheap.  I used to subscribe newspapers when I was in China.  A 100 pages weekly newspaper cost 11 dollars per year.  But one thing I don’t like about newspapers is my hands will oily and black after reading because of the ink.

Magazine is my favorite paper media.  Magazines are diversity since it can have any topic.  Magazines are more like the combination of books and paper.  Most of magazines have advancer paper, ink, and printing rather then something heavy or oily.  Magazines are not fast like newspaper or content more like a heavy book.  But magazines are more delicacy due to they are weekly or monthly published.  Since magazines are a weekly or monthly publication, the reporters have more time to organize their essay or finding more beautiful pictures.  Editor can pay more attention on editing frame and make a magazine more delicacy.

Movie is a media I love as well.  It’s a greater thing that movies tell the entire story within 2 hours compare to when I watched a soap opera and asked what’s going to happen next episode. But one thing regrettable is that people need to spend years to make one movie.

When talking about recordings, what I can think about is my iPod.  I love music so much that I can’t live without music. I put my earphone on almost every minute expect in class. I like pop, classic, and R&B music most.  There is an example, when i was in China, I walked home because walking to home take more time so that I have more time to listen to music. 

Radio is the media that I merely use.  People listen to radio in the car, but I don't have one. I watch TV and use internet at home and listen to music when I am outside, so there is no time to listen to radio. 

Television is a popular media all over the world.  People might don’t subscribe newspapers, magazines or don’t have a MP3 player, but they will have a TV in their home, especially in China.  I watch TV since I was a child. With the growing of me, the channels I watched changing from cartoon to news.  I was like growing with TV.

Internet is the most popular and powerful media in the world now.  There is no doubt that people use internet a lot or at least frequently.  I love internet, because I can do all the things above with a computer and internet access.  Internet is so powerful that I don’t know how to describe it.  Internet changes our lifestyle, change what we do, what we communicate and so on.

Magazines and TV are important for me when I growing up because I absorb tremendously information from them.  Internet would be the most important media for me know.  Like I said above, a computer and internet access can do everything.  I would like to major in public relations because the communication between person-to-media and person-to-person is so important in such a world.  I would like to transfer to SJSU a year later.
